Leading Smartphone Manufacturer | Role: interaction Design Director

A range of smartphone concepts was explored for a leading smartphone manufacturer. This effort introduced curved edge displays and methods for capturing still and moving images simultaneously, similar to Apple’s Live Photo technology, which launched years later.

Exploring A Range of User-Centered Concepts

Extensive time spent with users informed a range of smartphone form factors and features. Some were optimized for multi-tasking across split screens. Others solved the use case of needing both a work phone and a personal phone. The solution was a phone with two separate SIM cards and a display that could be spun to reveal personal or work phone content.

Seamless Edge Display Integration

Edge-to-edge, supplementary displays were explored in the Ticker concept. The edgeless primary displays immerse users in engaging content. Secondary displays on the edge of the phone are seamlessly integrated. These secondary displays were designed to help discretely glance at dynamically updated status indicators to stay current on news feeds and other notifications.

Spaces for All

The Spaces smartphone interface presented spaces containing content specific to events, people, documents, and groups. Users could navigate spaces using the capacitive touch bar by sliding their fingers left or right to swipe across areas in the interface. Scrolling was done by flipping the metal touch bar up or down, and it could be pressed to make a selection.

A Fresh Perspective

The Ticker concept had a parallax scrolling interface that could be navigated by simply rotating the phone from side to side. Dynamically updated “living content” content modules were presented within the main interface.

A New Spin on Things

Users could switch between two separate phone sim cards by spinning the display with their thumb using the Spin smartphone concept. This addressed many users' expressed desire to have a clearer separation between business phone use and personal phone content.
